YOUR 2026 COACHES

A Grade

Jeremy Smith

Meet Jeremy Smith, a rugby league luminary whose career spans the 2000s and 2010s, leaving an enduring legacy in both play and coaching. Born on April 14, 1980, in Christchurch, New Zealand, Jeremy's expertise now takes center stage in the coaching arena.

As a former professional rugby league player, Jeremy proudly represented clubs like the Melbourne Storm, St. George Illawarra Dragons, Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, and the Newcastle Knights, co-captaining the Knights to new heights. Notably, his stint with the Dragons included a spectacular win at the 2010 NRL Grand Final.

Grounded in Samoan heritage, Jeremy's journey began in Christchurch, he carries his cultural roots with pride. His educational path led him to Coombabah State High School.

Jeremy's junior football days kicked off at the Altona Roosters in Melbourne before he made the move to Queensland, playing a pivotal role for the Runaway Bay Seagulls RLFC. This coastal connection has become an integral part of Jeremy's rugby league story.

Jeremy's resilience was tested, and he emerged stronger. A setback with the Northern Eagles in 2001 didn't deter him. Returning to Queensland, he found his stride at the Melbourne Storm feeder club, Norths Devils, where he was named the 2004 Devils Player of the Year.

Now, as Jeremy steps into coaching, he brings a wealth of experience and a passion for Runaway Bay.

Paul Kuhnemann

Paul Kuhnemann’s life has revolved around rugby league – from playing to coaching and everything in between.

Paul’s journey in the game began at the age of 6, when he pulled on a Wests Bulldogs jersey in Toowoomba. Even as a youngster, his passion for the sport was evident. By 17, he found himself in an A-Grade grand final, playing alongside his brother – a moment that remains a highlight of his early playing career.

At 19, Paul moved to the Gold Coast to join the Seagulls and take the next step in his rugby league journey. He later spent 11 incredible years at Runaway Bay, competing in numerous grand finals and creating memories that would last a lifetime.

In 2010, the Kuhnemann family tradition continued as Paul’s two sons began playing for Runaway Bay. Seeing his boys take to the field inspired Paul to transition from player to coach. Over the next 11 years, he coached at the club and took on representative coaching roles with teams from the Gold Coast and South East Queensland, helping shape the next generation of rugby league talent.

Reserve Grade

Troy McLean

A huge welcome back to our returning Reserve Grade Head Coach, Troy McLean, and his family.

Troy brings over 20 years of coaching experience, having led clubs including Grafton, Casino and Murwillumbah. His knowledge of the game, passion for player development, and ability to build tough, connected teams have earned him widespread respect across the region.

In 2024, Troy guided Runaway Bay to the Reserve Grade Grand Final, falling just short on the day. That campaign laid a strong foundation — and there’s no doubt Troy returns with unfinished business.

We’re thrilled to have Troy back at the club and look forward to what lies ahead as we continue to build towards sustained success in 2026.

Under 19's

Shayne Boyd

Runaway Bay RLFC is proud to welcome home Shane Boyd as Head Coach of our Under 19 Men.

To some, Shane Boyd is remembered for his time as a former Balmain and Penrith first-grader in the early 1990s. To others, he’s known as the father of NRL halfback Tanah Boyd. But within the Runaway Bay community, Shane is recognised for his leadership, coaching expertise, and unwavering commitment to developing young men through rugby league.

Shane returns to Runaway Bay with a wealth of experience across elite junior pathways, bringing a deep understanding of the game and the demands of the transition into senior football. His coaching approach emphasises standards, accountability, and strong team culture — values that align closely with the foundations of our club.

As Head Coach of the Under 19s, Shane’s role extends well beyond tactics and performance. He is a mentor who supports players at a pivotal stage of their development, preparing them not only for higher levels of football, but for the responsibilities that come with adulthood. His return is a significant boost to our program and reinforces Runaway Bay’s commitment to strong pathways and sustainable success.

Jimmy Poland

Jimmy is Seagulls through and through. A long-time A-Grade leader, he’s built a reputation as a smart, tough pivot who understands the game inside out—whether he’s steering a side around at halfback or digging in at hooker. He leads with his actions, competes on every play, and expects standards to be met.

But Jimmy’s impact goes well beyond the field. He’s a respected voice in the local community, a strong advocate against ice use, and someone who genuinely invests in people—especially young players finding their feet. His involvement in Anzac Round and community initiatives reflects the values this club stands for: respect, service, and looking after one another.

For our Under 19s, Jimmy brings credibility, care, and accountability. He knows what it takes to wear the Seagulls jersey, and he’s committed to developing not just better footballers, but better young men.

Runaway Bay is proud to have Jimmy Poland leading the next generation.
